Oil, gas and petrochemicals

Robust measurement technology for inspecting surfaces in harsh environments.

In the oil, gas and petrochemical industry, large quantities of materials and liquids are moved, processed and stored – from crude oil to refined products and various chemical compounds. Extreme temperatures, high pressure and the handling of corrosive, highly flammable and toxic chemicals make the production environment particularly demanding. This presents companies with a variety of challenges when it comes to testing and complying with quality and safety standards such as NACE International, ISO, ASTM International or SSPC.

Fischer offers robust and high-precision measurement technology that guarantees reliable measurement results even under extreme conditions. Whether it's measuring the thickness of protective coatings on pipelines or on containers and tanks or material testing of steel and weld seams – we have the right measuring solution for your challenges!

As steel supply lines, pipelines are laid over thousands of kilometers to transport raw materials such as oil, gas or water. They run above and below ground, often under water, and are sometimes exposed to extreme environmental conditions. In accordance with international standards, the steel pipes are coated on the outside and inside to prevent leaks and ensure low-maintenance use over a long period of time.

Maximum corrosion resistance, thermal insulation, a reduction in throughput wear and the best possible protection against mechanical damage during transport, installation and laying are among the numerous requirements that protective coatings for pipelines must meet. This makes the coatings complex in their composition and application, and therefore a cost driver in these quantities.

The coating process must be closely monitored to ensure the right coating thickness to fulfill its function and to limit material consumption. The Fischer product portfolio includes measurement technology that can withstand harsh environmental conditions such as temperature fluctuations, dust and sand as well as moisture from rain, fog or condensation and delivers absolutely reliable measurement results.

Application Notes

Chemical and energy plants as well as process plants for petrochemicals and process engineering often have to withstand extreme heat, aggressive acids and vapors and high pressure. These conditions require particularly resilient steels and welds in the plant structure. The ferrite content and martensite content of the austenitic steels and duplex steels used are of crucial importance. If the ferrite content is too low, the material loses strength. If the ferrite content is too high, this in turn reduces toughness, ductility and corrosion resistance.

We have developed measuring devices specifically for measuring tasks of this kind, which deliver reliable measurement results at all times, even in demanding environments such as refineries, chemical factories or process engineering plants.

Application Notes

Processing plants in the oil, gas and petrochemical industry use numerous containers and tanks to store various media such as natural gas and crude oil, raw petrol and ethanol, salt and fresh water, as well as ballast, production water and other foaming liquids. The anti-corrosion coatings of the storage tanks must meet corresponding requirements and regulations such as NACE standard SP0193, ISO standard 12944 or Petrobras standard N-1201:2008, which specifies specific types of coating for corrosion protection for the inside of the tank.

The tanks are subject to the highest safety standards, especially for hydrogen, which must be stored in a liquid, cryogenic state. In the event of material fatigue due to corrosion or an excessively high α-martensite content, there is a risk of uncontrolled escape of hydrogen, resulting in ignitable mixtures. Fischer has developed reliable and non-destructive measurement technology solutions to determine the thickness of tank coatings or the α-martensite content in steel tanks so that you can detect leaks at an early stage and ensure the corresponding safety.
