With hardness measurement, you determine the resistance of a material to plastic deformation or penetration. With Fischer micro hardness measuring instruments, you can reliably characterize the mechanical properties of materials – from soft to very hard materials as well as coatings and surfaces down to the micro- and nanometer range. All our hardness gauges work according to the instrumented indentation test method (DIN EN ISO 14577, ASTM E 2546) and are suitable for a wide range of applications. Measuring is fast and mostly without time-consuming sample preparation, which makes it ideal for laboratory use and industry.

To characterize very hard, very thin or viscoelastic coatings and materials, you need powerful measuring methods and systems. Using instrumented indentation testing, you can determine numerous parameters such as indentation hardness, martens hardness, elastic indentation modulus or creep behavior. This is achieved by measuring the depth of the indentation of an indenting body into the surface of the material. The measuring method allows very accurate depth-dependent measuring of various material-specific parameters. Using various measurement modes, some of these quantities can also be analyzed in a depth-dependent manner.
