Application examples
Enamel surfaces are not only cut and scratch-resistant, but also bacteria-inhibiting and particularly resistant to corrosion and heat. They are designed to last. Enamel, for example, acts as the hardest and most mineralized protective layer in our bodies. Due to their characteristic hardness properties and exceptional durability, glass-forming oxides are specifically used in the medical technology and pharmaceutical industries to coat dental crowns, containers or reactors for production, for example.
Biocompatible materials such as ceramics, titanium or chromium-cobalt alloys, which are also characterized by extreme hardness and wear resistance, are also used in the manufacture of implants. Implants are also coated to achieve better compatibility and to protect the implant from body fluids – from classic silver coatings to photocatalytic titanium oxide coatings. Application Notes
In modern dentistry, conventional amalgam fillings have been replaced by so-called "composites" for some time now. This is a plastic filling made from a mixture of the finest glass and ceramic particles. The color of the composite filling can be matched to the existing teeth, while at the same time meeting the requirements for dimensional stability, pressure resistance and durability. With the measuring devices from Fischer, you can carry out high-precision and uncomplicated hardness measurements on medical plastic fillings and thus reliably test the material quality.
